A Guide to Selecting the Right Electric Wheelchair

A Guide to Selecting the Right Electric Wheelchair

Deciding to choose an electric wheelchair over a manual one can feel like navigating a minefield. Power chairs require very little force to maneuver, making them ideal for users with limited hand, arm, or leg mobility. Yet with hundreds of options on the market—varying in battery range, speed, weight, and ease of control—how do you pick the model that’s perfect for you?

At Convyu Wheelchairs, we’ve put together some tips to help you make the best decision:

Where Will You Use Your Chair?

The Department for Transport classifies electric wheelchairs as either Class 2 or Class 3:

Class 2 chairs are designed primarily for indoor use. They’re typically smaller and lighter, and can be used on pavements at up to 4 mph.

Class 3 chairs are heavier, larger, and non-folding, built for outdoor use. They must be registered with the DVLA to travel on roads at speeds up to 8 mph, and can switch to pavement mode at up to 4 mph.

How Far Will You Travel?

Think about how far you’ll need to go on a single charge. One of our models reaches speeds of 4 mph and can cover up to 15 miles when fully charged.

Consider Your Height and Weight

Your wheelchair’s dimensions should fit your body to provide full support and long-term comfort. You should be able to sit upright with good posture—back straight, hips level—and still have room to rotate your torso.
Ensure the chair won’t restrict movement or cause pressure sores. For users with limb differences, look for adjustable balance and anti-tip features to prevent falls.

Controls

Choose a control system that matches your range of motion and strength. The joystick is the most common interface, offering precise handling with minimal movement.
You might also consider a touchscreen controller—where you guide travel with your fingertip—or alternative switches operated by hand or head.

Storage

Store your electric wheelchair in a dry area with access to power for charging. Keep storage spaces clear of obstructions to avoid fire or trip hazards. Outdoor storage should include a weatherproof cover to protect against the elements.

Price

While cost is often a deciding factor, the most expensive model isn’t always the best fit. Research different options to ensure your budget aligns with your requirements. Remember, an electric wheelchair is a long-term investment designed to serve you reliably for many years.
